Children of the Mountains

I’m not a regular television viewer.  (This isn’t one of those highbrow I’m-too-good-for-teevee things. It has more to do with the fact that, when we watch prime time, the kids tend to notice movie promos or news teasers, both of which lead to uncomfortable questions, such as “what is a sexually-intense thriller?” and “why [...]

The Rip Van Winkle Episode

For three and a half weeks, I’ve made due with a fickle internet connection and a decrepit laptop.
Consequently, while the TVA was off managing a major environmental disaster  in true TVA-style (meaning they studied the disaster site(s), readily admitted that wiping out entire communities with toxic pond goo and poisoning the state’s drinking/fishing holes were minor incidents without serious  injury… [...]

Horizontal Newsrooms

I didn’t participate in the Knox News Sentinel’s “should we endorse a candidate” poll or the discussion. I have no strong opinion on the value of newspaper endorsements.
I can take them or leave them.
As a reader and a reformed newsie, I realize an endorsement is just an opinion. Granted, this opinion is an [...]

“Gettin’ It”

Last night, I watched a recently-returned journalist talk to some East Tennesseans about the Presidential debate – and the whole thing really bothered me.  Despite the Journalist’s Bobcat degree and having five years under his belt at two major dailies up North, in my opinion, there was something off about his method.
Some of [...]

Rob v. Roe on Detour

The debate of the United State House of Representative’s candidates for the 1st Tennessee Congressional District is available online for public download and distribution at “the detour.” The detour, a non-commercial/non-profit community radio service focused primarily on the Appalachia region, was the only radio station present, “working for the community while the corporate stations merely [...]

Kingsport’s Republican Rag

The Times-News reports that Rep. Nathan Vaughn is taking 2nd House District GOP challenger Tony Shipley to task for distributing a newspaper-style campaign piece Shipley calls the “Kingsport Community News.”
Shipley acknowledged the publication is paid for by his campaign.
“We put all kinds of things in it,” Shipley, of Colonial Heights, said of the publication. “I [...]

Last year, Ms. Diva stole Tiny T’s pucker powder candy. I don’t mean she placed it in her bag, mistakenly thinking it was her candy. I don’t mean she accidentally tripped and the candy fell into her mouth. I mean she stole it – on purpose, intentionally – she meant to [...]

Remember when the news had to be factual and unbiased? Yeah, okay. Me neither, but I do remember when readers or viewers had the ability to distinguish between fact and fiction.
This doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
What many of us accept as news these days is a hodgepodge of fact, [...]

Desaturating Davis?

I am not a supporter of David Davis.  Just in case there’s someone new here, I want to be clear about that.  As a matter of fact, so there can be no misunderstandings – I’ll go ahead and tell you I’m not voting for him this week. There are at least 11,005 reasons why.
Still, when [...]
